Guesthouses

St. Vincent & the Grenadines
2013 - 2015

We have designed a series of guest houses on a lush green sloping site in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, next to the checkerboard house. Instead of consolidating the guest rooms within one building, each one is treated as a small house on its own. They are placed strategically around the shared main house. Each one offers multiple views of the Atlantic as well as the Caribbean Sea. At the same time, the houses are invisible to one another, hiding in the thick greenery. They become person retreats. The six guest-houses are treated as an iteration of similar structures. Like the checkerboard house they are based on simple reinforced concrete frames. Every structure consists of three such frames, each of which houses a sculptural furniture infrastructure for the bedroom, bathroom or living area. In each guest- house, the frames connect in different constellations reacting to the topography and the ocean views resulting in varying L-shaped houses, a slender tower and a horizontal bar. A thin, fabric-reinforced arched canopy-roof covers each frame, offering protection from sun and rain.
