Competition Entry 2023

The Muslim Academy will occupy a prominent position in the urban landscape as the frontage piece of the new Bahnstadt development in Heidelberg. A stepped public foyer connects the street level, the elevated promenade for pedestrians and cyclists that runs alongside the building, and a roof terrace with a view over the entire Bahnstadt district.
The stepped foyer forms the interface between the academy and the urban public. At the same time, it also functions as a link to the Islamic building tradition with its stepped and terraced gardens such as the Bagh-e Shah. Similar to its historical models, water becomes an important architectural element in the terraced foyer: rainwater management becomes a sensory experience.
