The historic building complex of the brewery is set to become the urban center of the Holsten Quarter. It is characterized by existing buildings that are both architecturally significant and defining features of the cityscape.

The reinforced concrete structure of the so-called Schwankhalle, a former industrial workshop, with its widely projecting canopy offers an iconic silhouette. The volume of the projecting hotel structure features a cantilever following this silhouette. It offers a covered outdoor area, creating a striking entrance situation.

The south facade of the historic tower called Juliusturm, which is worthy of protection, will be preserved. In accordance with the usual structural procedure for facade preservation, a steel scaffold will support the facade during the demolition and reconstruction of the building behind it. While such steel scaffolding is usually removd after the construction work, we propose preserving it as a vertical extension of the publicly used open space in the form of “city balconies.”
