Infrastructure for Citizens

Since the 1950s the Selman Stermasi Stadium has been a significant public landmark for Tirana - initially operating as a venue for major sporting events, today as a place of tranquility and green.
The brief for its re-development asked for a substantial densification including a UEFA-standard stadium as well as housing, offices and a hotel. The challenge therefore was to ensure the continuing role of the site as a piece of public infrastructure for the neighborhood and the residents of Tirana at large.
Our project offers a protected ground floor that is open and generous reflecting both the climatic and social character of Tirana. It is conceived as a civic landscape composed of diverse programs that cater to different communities throughout the day. Arcades ensure its spatial openness and offer a semi-open public space that is shaded in the summer, sheltered in the winter.
By dividing the stadium seating into lower and upper tiers, the project introduces an open horizon at the level of the public arcade. On non-match days, the quiet and verdant field becomes a visual anchor for the neighborhood, enhancing the sense of openness and green.
