The residential complex offering 67 subsidized apartments occupies an inner-city brownfield site in Cologne Niehl-Riehl. It is located in a mixed-use area and is surrounded by commercial properties. The resulting noise exposure required the implementation of a large-scale south-facing sound protection wall.
We have translated this requirement for a sound barrier to meet acoustic living requirements into a linear structure housing the vertical circulation. It links all three new residential blocks and bundles their staircases and elevators. With its south-facing soundproof glazing, it also offers space for urban gardening for residents. The project is a further development of the serial construction approach based on industrial precast concrete elements developed as part of the Wohnregal and Lion-Feuchtwanger-Strasse projects.
